Construction

• Mahogany on oak clinker construction
• Original builder's plaque in wheelhouse
• Hull underwater understood to be watertight
• Topsides taken back to wood, epoxy filled where necessary, primed and painted with Witham Paints marine gloss 2013
• Recent coachroof and wheelhouse roof repairs
• Bronze air vents on coachroof
• Original restored mild steel pulpit (not shown in photos) connected to stainless steel guard rails
• Large mahogany seat below stern (requires sanding and re-varnishing)
• Substantial engine box with detachable sides providing excellent access to engine
• Recent new floorboards in cockpit

Remarks

The Nelson 23, which is a smaller version of the Nelson 30 Cabin Utility Launch (as exhibited at the 1961 International Boat Show - see link to advert at bottom of page), was built for use as a general runabout and day launch for utility use, and was based on the launches used by the Royal Navy to ferry officers, crew and supplies to frigates and destroyers on anchor or laid up in harbour. The Nelson 23 has a lovely classic shape, with her attractive cabin and wheelhouse, high cockpit combings, and clinker built hull. With some further work (understood to be predominantly cosmetic in nature) and general TLC, this example could be a lovely little craft, ideal for cruising or fishing on the Broads or coast, or as a utility boat, for example for ferrying crew and sails to a large racing yacht. Currently lying ashore.
